Fug Girls: We Miss Posh’s Lady Lumps

Picture Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham. Ten bucks says your mental sketch includes the following: a crabby expression, enough bronzer to paint all of Beckham Manor, and two breast implants as distracting and disproportionate as golf balls on a toothpick. These are the three (well, technically four) key components to her outsize, indelible public image. So not only were we shocked when Vicky was rumored to have had her silicone flotation devices yanked, but, in the ensuing weeks, we've struggled to come to terms with her new streamlined silhouette. In a way, by losing those ten pounds of chemical mammary, Lady B has jettisoned something even bigger: her essential Poshness. And frankly, what we want — what we really, really want — is to have it back.

Alexander Wang’s Biker Shorts Cost $395

Alexander Wang's fall stuff just hit Shopbop.com. The biker shorts paired with numerous looks in the fall 2009 show cost $395 and are one of Shopbop's Editors' Picks. Cheap JAP reacts: "When first I saw the price on Wang’s Pseudopants, I assumed they were made from leather, snakeskin, or the tusks of a rare, near-extinct breed of rhinoceri. That wouldn’t excuse paying the $395 pricetag, but at least it’d explain the ludicrous cost ... If I’m paying upwards of $400 for SHORTS, that shit better be drenched in diamond dust a la Madonna’s eyelashes. Not made out of fucking rayon and spandex." [Cheap JAP]

  • Nipple Pasties Are Not Tops

Rihanna Copies Lady Gaga’s Nipple Pasties

Rihanna Copies Lady Gaga’s Nipple Pasties

Something fascinating occurred this week in the Universe of Diva Fashion. Rihanna, one of the Universe's top trendsetters, stepped out wearing hot-pink nipple pasties under a sheer black top. Only they weren't even nice nipple pasties like the silver stars she glued to her boobs on the Fourth of July, but just pieces of tape that made an "X" over each nipple — like cheap, recession-era DIY nipple pasties. Now, in April, Lady Gaga stepped out in a sheer black top with black tape concealing her nipples in much the same fashion. What is fascinating is not necessarily the pasties or style of the pasties, but that Rihanna did something Lady Gaga has already done. After all, before we had Gaga, Rihanna had solidified her place as a top trendsetter, and not only with her amazing, ever-changing hair dos. Maybe in the way that not wearing pants and looking generally beyond ridiculous is Lady Gaga's thing, Rihanna is trying to make nipple pasties her thing. But why? She already has so many signatures. Her hair, as we mentioned, her insanely fierce jewelry, her elaborate nails, her edgy taste in designers. She doesn't need to take cues from Gaga. The world only needs one Gaga, and Rihanna is fierce, fabulous, and worthy of obsession all on her own. But she does need some new bras or opaque shirts or some strategically placed Kermit the Frog dolls, dammit, because this nipple-pasty thing has got to stop. A little décolletage is one thing, but exposing the entirety of one's underboob — nay, boobs — is more vulgar than running around in only a leotard, blazer, and panty hose.

Factoriem Showcases Emerging Designers and Young Artists

After working as an assistant designer for Richard Chai and TSE, Binna Lee decided to open her own boutique featuring a rotating selection of fashion and art, as well as select pieces from her own jewelry line. The store’s name, Factoriem, comes from Lee’s own interest in garment factories and the craftsmanship that goes into producing clothes. In her narrow, industrial space, Lee carries pieces that range from dresses by Alexander Berardi to lesser-known names like Wakana Koike, a Japanese designer whose spring line focuses on bold, bright prints. There are also accessories and random objects, like the assorted mixed-materials teddy bears made by a recent Parsons grad, which help to give the store a quirky, eclectic feel. Right now, many of Factoriem’s original summer pieces are on sale, so it’s a perfect time to head over and check out the goods.

Ali Wise Joins the Ranks of the Unemployed

Ali Wise is a Dolce & Gabbana publicist no longer. After her arrest earlier this month for allegedly hacking into another socialite's voice mail, the house confirmed that she is no longer with the them, but did not say why. In her downtime, Ali has watched sports at Blaue Gans, attended a Pete Yorn concert, and tweeted about both activities. We hope she enjoys her new world, where calories are perhaps never viewed with the same fear as, say, herpes. [Daily Intel]

Vogue Staffers Can’t Wear Flats?

Anna Wintour sent shock waves through the world when she wore flats to a party in the Hamptons over the weekend. Last night at a party celebrating Intermix's launch of rag & bone, we asked Vogue's Lauren Santo Domingo what that was all about. She hadn't heard about Wintour's Flatsgate but pondered, "I wonder if that means we can wear flats to the office now." Think she'll brave it?

Hussein Chalayan ‘Weirded Out’ by Models Who Design Clothes

Hussein Chalayan ‘Weirded Out’ by Models Who Design Clothes

Photo: Patrick McMullan

Kate Moss, Erin Wasson, Elle Macpherson, and, most recently, Amber Valletta have all added "slash designer" to their job titles. Taking clothes designed by models seriously is hard enough for us, and we can barely stitch a button on a sweater. After blogging about fashion for long enough, we've learned to accept and sometimes (ironically) embrace their work. But Hussein Chalayan doesn't stare at fashion on the Internet all day, has created technologically magnificent dresses with LED laser lights, and once struggled for funding. So these model clothes don't amuse him in quite the same way. WWD reports:

“If you have a really strong sense of style and people want to aspire to being like you, I can understand that,” he says. “But if you really are doing it just because you think of yourself as a brand and you haven’t had the training and you know nothing about clothes, it kind of demeans all the training that designers have had.”

Best Bet: Lucky Charms

Best Bet: Lucky Charms

We wrote off charm bracelets sometime back in the nineties; the novelty of collecting a representative trinket for every occasion faded fast. We’ve since seen various incarnations of the personalized jewelry trend, from Carrie Bradshaw–spawned nameplate necklaces to Swarovski’s crystallized empire. But L.B. Valentine’s double-sided letter charms caught our eye with their tongue-in-cheek, mockingly cute images. "U" pairs a unicorn on one side with a pair of well-endowed tightie-whities; "J" depicts a jackpot and the ubiquitous jumpsuit; "T" shows a comely trapeze artist and target practice; and "M," fittingly, is for man and magnet (there’s something cheekily amusing about a having tiny male torso inscribed in fourteen-karat gold). Who says you have to stick to your own initials?

L.B. Valentine charms, $67 (sterling silver) or $496 (fourteen-karat gold) each at Auto or online.

‘Extremely Positive’ Things Are Happening for Christian Lacroix

‘Extremely Positive’ Things Are Happening for Christian Lacroix

Photo: Getty Images

Time to check in on Christian Lacroix! This week, the designer submitted a joint bid for his bankrupt company with Italy's Borletti Group. The French Industry Minister invited him to a meeting yesterday and Lacroix described their conversation as "extremely positive." If the bid goes through, Lacroix would become a shareholder in the company. Also, the house's couture and licensing businesses would remain open while a new ready-to-wear line is developed. The plan could also include the launch of a new fragrance.

Courts won't rule on the bids until September. But the company's rescue is sounding increasingly likely. Lacroix also noted the support of "people in the street." The government, which regards Lacroix's brand as a symbol of France, also wants to see the label flourish. France is so wonderful sometimes.

Dasha Zhukova Is the New Editor-in-Chief of Pop, But She Doesn’t Know Much About Fashion

Dasha Zhukova Is the New Editor-in-Chief of Pop, But She Doesn’t Know Much About Fashion

Photo: Getty Images

At the beginning of the year, the legendary Katie Grand abandoned her editor-in-chiefdom of Pop for Condé Nast's new Love magazine. She took most of her Pop staff with her, leaving Pop's very survival uncertain. Then Russian socialite Dasha Zhukova was randomly installed as Grand's replacement, as though every experienced stylist or editor that might have had a shot at filling Grand's shoes had joined the Peace Corps. Prior to the appointment, which the fashion world blatantly scoffed at, Dasha was arguably most famous for her relationship with Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. But Dasha's fist issue of Pop is due out September 1, so it's time for her to start doing damage control. You know, reaffirming her talent, credibility, and fashion expertise to the fashion industry. Perhaps that's why she agreed to do an interview for Interview, which obnoxiously waxes on for four pages before even getting into Pop.

Fran Drescher to Launch Skin-Care Line for HSN

Fran Drescher.

Fran Drescher.Photo: Getty Images

Fran Drescher — yes, she of The Nanny — is launching a collection of organic skin-care products exclusively with HSN this fall. Named FranBrand, the nine-piece line includes a cleanser, toner gel, day lotion, eye gel, night eye cream, night face cream, body moisturizer, face serum, and lip balm (available on the HSN channel and online starting November 10). Drescher was hands-on in the products' creation, working for over a year with a chemist in California and an organic manufacturing plant in Oregon. "Women are schmearing stuff on their décolleté, wondering why we're all getting breast cancer. Once you wake up and smell the coffee, it's hard to go back to sleep. So I'm sounding the alarm," Drescher tells us, noting that as a survivor of uterine cancer and founder of the cancer nonprofit organization Cancer Schmancer, she made it a priority that all manufacturing facilities, formulas, and packaging are organic, paraben-free, and carcinogen-free. "I couldn't possibly sell something that wasn't good for me. I'm still in therapy because I put other people's needs above myself."

Also of interest: When she's not hocking FranBrand, Drescher's continuing to spend her time working for the State Department as a public-diplomacy envoy for women’s-health issues. "I'm sent all over the world. I'm going to the Middle East in November, right after I launch FranBrand. Hillary is my new boss. I love her. She's great. I already spoke at the White House — Mrs. Obama invited me." So did she give Michelle any FranBrand yet? "No, not yet. I can't wait."

The Stylist Who Looks Like a Male Grace Jones

Devohn Walker has styled Beyoncé, Lil' Kim, and Mya, among other artists. Channeling Grace Jones in his downtime, in an all-black ensemble with Lady Gaga sunglasses and a belt around his neck, he was impossible for this week's Video Look Book cameras to miss. He describes his style as "high-fashion couture slash ethnic slash universal." He added, "I feel like you have to be a diamond in this world. You can’t be the same as everyone else, like a crystal.” Watch the Video Look Book to find out what he wears when he goes out at night.

Charles Jourdan Shoes to Relaunch in October

Charles Jourdan shoes were big in the sixties and seventies, but new shoes haven't been produced in some time, though the label's still huge in the vintage-shoe world. But this October at Paris Fashion Week, the label will relaunch with shoe designer Alexandra Neel at the helm. Neel previously worked at Balenciaga and Celine. “I try to do something very different for stiletto addicts who are looking for something other than [the] usual," she said. This should be amazing. Gisele’s Baby Bump Photoshopped Out of Her New Ad Campaign

Gisele’s Baby Bump Photoshopped Out of Her New Ad Campaign

Photo: Courtesy of London Fog

If you've been tossing and turning at night wondering why Bar Refaeli replaced Gisele Bündchen as the face of Rampage, it's because of Gisele's baby bump. Now, true, Gisele hasn't herself announced that she is, in fact, with child, but last week Vogue confirmed it in a blog post about what she should wear when she's in full bump mode. Today, WWD reveals Gisele's campaign for trench-coat company London Fog, which is owned by Iconix Brand Group, the same parent company of Rampage. Apparently Gisele was supposed to do another Rampage campaign, but WWD reports "for a few reasons, including her pregnancy" she now appears in the London Fog campaign, where she wears trench coats instead of skintight jeans — and still fulfills her contractual obligation to the Iconix people.

Gisele's baby bump was Photoshopped out of the London Fog ads to "respect her privacy," according to an Iconix spokesman. You can see in the image on the right that some shading was added to her stomach. On the left it appears as though the retouchers used Photoshop's liquify tool on her midsection and then added a mysteriously small, faint belly button. In that position, with her back arched, anyone's belly would stick out more. London Fog also released a behind-the-scenes video of the photo shoot that reveals Gisele wore panties that were also Photoshopped out of the ads. Judging by this footage and the final product, her breasts may also have been digitally reshaped and pushed together slightly. Click ahead to watch the video. There's not much to it other than Gisele sitting there while a photographer tells her she's gorgeous, but it has a soothing, meditative quality to it. Besides, looking at Gisele and feeling jealous never gets old.
